Summertime in the Mountains
The winter season brings skiers to mountain resorts as they take on the slopes to tackle tough runs and push themselves on the white stuff. But in the summer a whole new group of holidaymakers take to the mountains as the snow has disappeared and the scenery takes a summery look. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the best that the summer mountains have to offer.
Mountain Biking – For those who like a more strenuous activity, mountain biking offers a great way to unwind and take in the scenery whilst enjoying the summer sun and cool mountain breeze. Companies in mountain resorts often run bike hire businesses as well as creating biking trails and taking groups on excursions around the mountain trails. There are things for beginners as well as intermediate and expert mountain bikers and although it is not advised to go off on one’s own, it is possible for those who wish to be at one with nature.
Walking and Hiking – The ski lifts which are thriving with skiers in the winter months give way to walkers and hikers who take the lifts to be able to explore vast parts of the mountainside in one day. The scenery can be enjoyed at a more relaxed pace than on a mountain bike and is a great way to get some exercise.
White Water Rafting – The Alps are renowned for their excellent white water rafting rivers, ranging from easy ones to more difficult and turbulent ones for courageous beginners or experienced rafters. For around £30-£40 you can book a 2-3 hour session with an experienced guide to take you on the exhilarating ride down the mountain rivers as you paddle to avoid rocks and a rather painful accident.
Apres-Ski - The Apres Ski opportunities in the summertime Alps are as good as in the thriving winter months, and the nightlife which resorts such as Val D’Isere and Val Thorens are famed for is as alive as ever. Most restaurants stay open during the summer and the local amenities such as swimming pools, cinemas and the bars are open too. With flights to the Alps readily available, good accommodation and affordable car hire from Holiday Autos, a summer break in the mountains is an enjoyable proposition indeed.
